The Benefits of Pilates

Pilates is a thoughtful method that connects our mind and body. Our mind concentrates on precise control of movement, along with deep breathing, that relieves stress and prepares our body for Pilates exercises.

Pilates works first on the deep, inner stablising muscles that strengthen the alignment and movement of the spine. As we progress with more challenging exercises, we further strengthen our core, challenge and improve the stamina of our abdominals, and increase the mobility and strength of our limbs.

  • You should feel some relief from stress and stress related disorders.  Relaxation is one of the basic principles, and a sense of inner calm is often felt after a Body Control session.

  • Your general health will improve.  The exercises will stimulate the circulatory system, oxygenating the blood, aiding lymphatic drainage and releasing endorphins which are responsible for the "feel-good" factor.  Your immune system is given a boost so that you will have greater resistance to disease and illness.

  • The elimination of bad postural habits.  The body is retrained to work efficiently, so that you can move with greater economy and grace.  As you hold yourself straighter, you will feel and look taller.  It may even be that  you grow taller, as your spine is allowed to lengthen out to its natural height.

  • You will both look and feel younger and your skin will improve.  Yo may not lose weight, as muscle weighs more than fat, but you will look leaner as your posture and alignment improve and everything goes back to its rightful (and original) place.

  • Improved flexibility, strength, joint mobility, co-ordination, balance and alignment.

  • Correct alignment will mean that all your vital organs will be properly supported, enabling them to function efficiently.

  • Relief from back pain.  Body Control has a lot to offer back pain sufferers. The combination of strengthening "core" muscles within the torso, changing muscle lengths, rebalancing and relaxing the body, and teaching good postural habits, makes this method highly effective in preventing back trouble.

Please note that Pilates is not a treatment for acute back pain and clients with back or other injuries must be given the all-clear from a medical professional to begin a new exercise routine such as Pilates.
